Migrant participation in the Finnish workforce

Abstract: In a globalised world, migration has made it increasingly necessary for individuals to acquire a broad range of semiotic resources which fall outside of those they have acquired in their early lives. Economic pressures serve to emphasize this need as migrants search for employment, both in high-tier and low-tier job markets. Migrants to Finland are no exception to this generalisation. After examining the online presence of a large source of low-tier jobs, I will argue that low-tier work in Finland demands access to semiotic resources in both English and Finnish, and that this acts as a means of gatekeeping and exclusion.
